Feedback from our volunteers
Alex Hoelscsher

I think the best way to summarize the experience is by telling you who I was when I got on the United Flight out of Nashville, Tennessee headed 8,000 miles away for Cape Town, South Africa three months ago. Getting on that plane I had never bungee jumped before, I have now done the highest bungee jump in the world.

I hadn’t mountain biked, swam with Crocs, hiked a Wonder of the World (Congrats Table Mountain), dove with sharks, been through anything like a township, worked for Red Bull, been on the set of a commercial or feature length documentary. I’ve done all those things now.

I hadn’t stumbled through Long Street and had yet to even know those friends that would be stumbling right alongside me even existed. In fact, I didn’t have any friends who lived outside the US. I didn’t know how to surf, thought I knew what robots were and had never had any of the projects I worked on shown on a big screen to over 2,000 screaming fans.

I have now done all of these things thanks to my internship with. It’s the people that make the experience great. I’m so thankful I got on that plane.

Rob Weidner

My time here in Cape Town has sadly came to an end. Luckily, I left with the intention of coming back very soon and that is the only thing that helped me cope with my departure.

The routine of getting up at 8 o’clock every morning, heading into town on my scooter, working without a proper lunch break, running a hard drive to Somerset or a filter to Camps Bay, going for an end-of-the-day hike up Devil’s Peak or Lion’s Head, having a braai for my housemates and friends for dinner, and heading to bed only to do the same the next day, was certainly one that I could get used to.

Our infinity wall in the studio needed to be painted flat white often because of all our castings and shoots we had so I would frequently and willingly go home with white speckles on my feet. From my experiences here in Cape Town I have definitely gained inspiration to finish up school and get into the working world. I would love to come back to Cape Town to work in the video industry and the past 4 months has taught me so much.

Stephanie Turner

No one could have ever prepared me for this amazing experience abroad. When I left Canada I was incredibly nervous to step off a plane all alone in South Africa. But within 2 minutes of being in Cape Town I knew this was the right choice for me. The people I have met and the opportunities thrown my way have been so unreal. I feel like I’ve been living a dream for the past 8 weeks and I don’t want anyone to wake me up.

My internship at BigSky Productions has been phenomenal. I have had the chance to get involved in all aspects of film production. I’ve put myself out there and shown that I am capable of working very well in this tough industry. I have met people and have created lasting relationships and I know that when I return to South Africa in the future I’ll be able to call this place home once more.
