Our ground-breaking Whale Shark Conservation Project is located at the beach village of Tofo on the Inhambane peninsula in southern Mozambique and is ideal if you are considering studying marine biology or are just interested in a volunteer project with marine life.

The inshore area of this tropical, beach village has a particularly high density of whale sharks. Tofo also has some pristine tropical coral reefs and the coast is spectacularly rich in coconut palms. It is an excellent (and stunning) location to investigate whale shark and marine ecology.

To begin the programme you will do a 3 - 5 day (weather dependent) PADI open-water scuba diving course, preparing you with the skills to observe the whale sharks and other fish, corals, etc., that you will be monitoring, in the water. During turtle laying and hatching season you will patrol the beaches monitoring their nest sites and success of hatching. As a volunteer with these marine animals you will be assisting with important research on their behaviour and population numbers.

We believe that for the full impact of our projects to be achieved that, wherever possible, it is important to educate and empower the local community so that they can assist rather than hamper conservation efforts.
To this end this volunteer project with marine animals includes an awareness and education component - to generate awareness about the conservation of whale sharks and manta rays, and to develop educational materials for this purpose.
