ST LUCIA INTERNSHIP, SOUTH AFRICA

Orphanage Support
When school finishes at 2pm, children walk home where household chores, such as looking after younger siblings and fetching water, await them. Twice per week this is delayed for a couple of hours, when we provide an After-School Club for orphans and vulnerable children attending the primary school in local village Ezwenelisha.  We are able to provide a safe, fun and educational club for children aged 6 – 16. Also living independently at the school in a purpose-made home are six orphan boys. The club gives them the opportunity to join in with the fun or to get help from the volunteers on their English and homework if they choose.  Through care and play we aim to give the children a little of their childhood back and ensure they have fun.

Ten Families
This programme aims to improve the quality of life for families in need of assistance.  We work directly with families in order to help provide sustainable solutions. Families are chosen by the iNduna (Chief) of Ezwenelisha Village, based on the family’s needs. Help can take many forms including food provision, education, property repairs, farming, finding access to medical attention and income generation.  THAF aims to provide essential items such as farming tools, educational resources, building materials.

Building and Refurbishment Project
With a lack of resources and government  funding, community buildings in the local villages tend to be run down, particularly in the more rural and remote areas.  THAF aims to help build and refurbish key amenities and facilities identified by the Indunas of neighbouring villages. Supporting this project will enable us to continue to fix roofs, windows, paint walls, and help build new rooms for a school, day care centre, community centre or for a house of someone in need.

CAPE TOWN INTERNSHIP, SOUTH AFRICA

Red Hill Pre-School
Red Hill Pre-School caters for 24 children aged 4-6 years old. The school is built from old metal shipping containers that are in bad repair often resulting in leaking rainwater in the cold winter months. The Happy Africa Foundation is partnering with the preschool to help to sponsor children whose parents cannot afford to pay for their school fees, feed the children two nutritious meals a day, provide learning materials and medical supplies as well as maintaining and improving the school’s facilities.

Animal Rescue Centre
We assist with an animal rescue centre that houses 160 dogs and 90 cats. T.E.A.R.S Animal Rescue Centre rescues and rehabilitates abused and mistreated animals and provides free treatment and sterilisation for pets from local disadvantaged communities. The centre has an adoption programme and tries to rehouse all of its animals in loving homes. The Happy Africa Foundation hopes to raise funds for TEARS to help feed and care for the animals as well as provide for the general upkeep of the shelter.

Ukhanyo Sports Project
Ukhanyo Sports Project is a sports programme run at local school Ukhanyo Primary. We assist the coach with running effective and stimulating physical education lessons for the children. Sport is hugely important for the children; for both their health and general well-being, it is also an opportunity for children to play and interact with each other. Funding the programme will help to purchase much needed sports equipment and kit as well as medical supplies.

LIVINGSTONE INTERNSHIP, ZAMBIA

Nakatindi Health & Education Centre
The Happy Africa Foundation (THAF) is currently building a health and education centre at a local school to be used by the residents and surrounding rural communities. The Nakatindi Health and Education Centre will provide valuable classroom space for the overcrowded school, a guidance/health office (the closest medical clinic is 5kms away) a computer centre, and a library, which will be filled with books from the Books for Africa container (see project below). Although the building work is nearly finished, we are still looking for funding to furnish and complete the building.

Books for Africa
The Happy Africa Foundation is teaming up with Books for Africa to greatly increase the availability of books for Livingstone’s youth. Books for Africa is a well-known name on American university campuses where students often donate their used textbooks to be given to African recipients. There is a severe book shortage in Livingstone; we hope to help change this with the delivery of a container of 40,000 books to Livingstone, which we will then distribute to many of the local schools.

Malota School Expansion Project
THAF’s next project is the Malota School Expansion Project; building a twin classroom and office block for a school in a densely populated area of Livingstone. Approximately 150 children attend Malota School; but with only two small classrooms to accommodate all the children the children are forced to come to school at staggered times, sometimes for only as little as two hours, before they have to return home and the next children arrive. The new classroom block will reduce the need for ‘hot seating’ so that students can spend more of their time at school and keep them away from streets.
