Botswana - Country Information

‘The Land of the Giants…’ is how locals fondly describe Botswana. This is because her vast tableland allows for elephants, giraffe and baobabs to tower above the horizon and attest dramatically to their sheer size.

Botswana Visas

No visa is required for visits of up to 90 days for citizens of most Commonwealth countries, most European countries and the United States. Travellers to Botswana are required to have a return/onward ticket and sufficient funds to support themselves for the duration of their visit there.

Botswana Health, Vaccinations, HIV/AIDS & Drinking Water

Malaria - Malaria prophylactics recommended by your personal physician are necessary. As well as insect repellent and covering yourself up with long trousers and light cotton long-sleeved shirts in the evenings.

Vaccinations - Hepatitis A, Polio and Typhoid

HIV/AIDS - Botswana does have one of the highest AIDS rates in the world, so it is advised that you take all necessary precautions.

It is not necessary to drink bottled water in Botswana.

Botswana Safety

The best advice is for you to be a well-informed traveller and that you adequately prepare yourself for your travel experience. African Impact offers 24-hour ground support for all our volunteers, and our coordinators will advise you on how best to integrate yourself into your country and your programme.

Please see our safety guidelines for more information or contact us if you have any specific questions about travel safety in Botswana.

Botswana Weather & Climate
  • Botswana is mainly made up of arid bushveld areas or semi-desert, so the weather is normally very dry.
  • The rainy season, from November to March, is very hot with intermittent afternoon downpours.
  • May to September weather is somewhat cooler, and chilly in the evenings and early mornings.

Botswana Travel Highlights

  • Landlocked Botswana offers any traveller very real bush experiences, including vast wildlife reserves such as Chobe National Park – home to some of Africa’s largest herds of elephants
  • The Makgadikgadi Pan – the World’s largest dry lakebed
  • Makori Safaris involve traversing the intriguing Okavango Delta whilst being poled by local boatmen through tranquil waterways
  • The Chobe area in Northern Botswana is also within reach of day trips to the Victoria Falls in neighbouring Zimbabwe
