What makes a good volunteering organization, and what makes a great one? Well, we are proud to be the best volunteering organization in Africa because of our commitment to sustainability, and our goal to constantly strive to provide the best experiences for our volunteers while working alongside community stakeholders who drive our initiatives. As a result of all this hard work, we have been honoured with the accolades and awards, many of which have come just this year.
2014 Global Youth Travel Award for Outstanding Project
The Global Youth Travel Awards 2014 were held at the World Youth and Student Travel Conference in Dublin in September, African Impact took home the award for Outstanding Volunteer for our incredible Cape Town programs. Volunteers on our projects in South Africa’s Mother City participate in a number of programs including teaching volunteer projects, community volunteer projects and sports development programs.
This award means that according to the World Youth & Student Travel Confederation, this project is effectively the best volunteering program in the world! What an amazing achievement!
David Chapman, Director General of WYSE Travel Confederation, said: “The caliber of nominations this year across all 12 award categories has been truly outstanding. As youth travel blossoms into the tourism industry’s fastest growing segment, it’s important to acknowledge the wealth of talent and innovation from the companies as well as individuals driving this growth.”
2014 GoAbroad Award for Innovative New Project – Maasai Literacy Program in Moshi, Tanzania
Announced mid-year, our Maasai Literacy Program in Moshi, Tanzania was the recipient of the 2014 GoAbroad Award for Innovative New Project. Established in mid-2013, the primary aim of this particular literacy program is to teach members of the Maasai tribe to read, write, as well as to speak basic, conversational English.
Having won this award in 2013, we were proud to accept the accolade again – proving that our projects continue to develop with quality in mind.
Finalists in the 2014 World Travel Awards for Leaders in Conservation
A new award this year, our wildlife volunteering projects in Zanzibar, South Africa and the Naboisho Conservancy were all nominated. Despite not coming out with a top prize, we were recognized as finalists in the field of Leaders in Conservation for our efforts in monitoring wildlife, tracking animals on reserves, and teaching communities about conservation.
In October, we were delighted to be presented with the award for Best Social Involvement Programme by the Lilizela Tourism Awards, also known as the Imvelo Awards. This accolade highlights our work in the Western Cape, where our Cape Town programs are located, but also underscores the social responsibilities of our projects all over Africa.
