Life experiences, we all know there is no replacement and we simply can’t be well-rounded individuals without them! They all change us and make us feel a mixture of emotions in one instant, but they also broaden our minds and emotions, and push us to our extremes too live a full life! "This trip changed my life forever, in that dramatic movie kind of way. I experienced things that put me outside of my normal "box" and I found myself in a new world. The people I met during this adventure not only taught me new things, but have made sure that they will remain in my life forever. I honestly cannot describe my admiration and respect for South Africa. All I can say is, the moment I stepped off the plane from America, I knew, deep down, that I was home." Sara Parker Nason, Charlotte, USA This young lady came on a school trip to visit Africa for the first time with five of her fellow students and a dozen chaperones. The plan was to give privileged children from Providence Day School (an independent, co-educational college preparatory school in North Carolina) a cultural insight and understanding of school life in South Africa. This school has brought students out here for the past two years resulting in a successful impact on the teenagers involved. The girls visited St. Cyprian’s school, Leap Science and Maths school and Bishops School which are all independent schools in Cape Town. Maybe intentionally the only township school the girls were visiting was saved until last, Red Hill pre-school, which is African Impact's flagship project from 2008. The pre-school has been running for over 10 years and the 26 beautiful children range between 3 and 6 years of age, and mostly come from a Xhosa background. The school is run out of several containers with very limited resources. The children are given 2 meals a day, breakfast and lunch, which is sponsored by African Impact through our Sponsor a Child Initiative. African Impact have also stepped in by adopting this school and paying for the teacher's and cook’s monthly wages. This will be financed through volunteer project fees. As a volunteer the mission is to educate and support these disadvantaged, vulnerable children, while helping to uplift the community not only through education, but also through health-care, building projects and sports. The girls had a taster day of volunteering, our pre-school children were more than welcoming to their visitors and this made the girls feel at ease. They got straight into some community work, clearing and weeding the gardens around the pre-school. They were so enthusiastic that even the children wanted to join in with the work! After some fun playing and interacting with the kids it was back to lesson time. The girls had prepared a song and dance to do with the kids and this went down brilliantly and our African Impact staff joined in too. After this they acted out a story to the children and had even made masks which entertained the kids to no ends. It was a huge success to bring so many smiles in such a short space of time! It is for these children and communities that we need volunteers help! Last year one of the students from Providence Day School, Lindsay Toal, returned home from her visit here and asked everyone who attended her sweet 16th birthday party to donate to Red Hill preschool to help provide lunches, a clean playground and other necessities instead of bringing presents. This was tremendously successful as Lindsay raised a donation of $531 which the preschool in association with African Impact are extremely grateful for! The money will be used directly to help re-build the school. South Africa's history is deeply divided into two economies, one qualified, modern and rich, and the other low-skilled, poor and dependent on aid for survival. I’m sure this trip will impact these young ladies for the rest of their life's and help them to make the right choices as they come into adulthood and decide how to live their future.
