Ted Wilmott – The Horse Whisperer – is the Stables Manager at Antelope Park. Legendary in more ways than one, he has been working with horses in the African Bush his whole life. He now takes pride in passing that knowledge onto interns joining our Holistic Horse Management Internship. We wanted to find out who was the man behind the ‘Horse Whisperer.’ We asked him a few questions and heere’s what he said:
After all your many years of experience what made you come to Antelope Park?
My first impression of Antelope Park drew me in immediately, such a beautiful stables in a serene setting as this one right in the heart of the bush, I would be mad not come! It was a challenge to take on the Horse Management Internship but surrounded by so many positive people it was challenge I wanted to take on.
What’s the best thing about working at Antelope Park?
Without a doubt it’s seeing young interns turn into fine horsemen and women and develop into great characters. We have Interns who have never ridden a horse in their life to experienced riders, but one thing that always pleases me is how they leave not only a better rider but a better person.
What’s your fondest memory of working here?
Hosting the Polocrosse National Test Match between Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa and seeing the volunteers play such an integral part.
What do the interns bring to the stables?
Knowledge and experience from all over the world. Our horses have a very gentle nature and they are this way because of the way they are treated by the interns and the new skills and techniques they learn from different countries.
What would your advice be to anyone considering becoming a Holistic Horse Management Intern?
From the amount of time you spend in the saddle everyday learning and becoming a better horseman or woman, it’s impossible to not leave as a better person! The friends you make with other interns and staff along the way will stay with you forever.
We asked our longest serving intern Bartolomeo Cavina why he came to Antelope Park and he said: "Where else in the world can you volunteer with horse and lions at the same time? Working with Ted aka the Horse Whisperer is unbelievable, I would never have imagined how much I’ve learnt from him in such a short space of time. "
