Why YOU should join a Group Volunteering Tour this Summer
My first two trips to Africa were on overland tours, if you aren’t familiar, it is a great way to travel across Africa by road with a group of strangers who don’t stay strangers for long. Overlanding has many advantages to the solo traveler. You gain access to parts of Africa that are difficult to get to, you have a built in support system of other travelers, you don’t have to do the planning, you get to experience all difference sides of Africa from wildlife to culture and driving across Africa gives you a window seat with a view…from the change in landscapes to an insight into the daily lives of the locals, in many areas life is lived along these roadsides and there is much to be seen.
I fell in love with Africa on my first two overland trips, my first to Botswana and Zambia and the second trip to Tanzania. These two trips were filled with life changing, soul stirring experiences. I had my first lion sighting, I summited Mount Kilimanjaro. I didn’t think these experiences could be topped, but what I didn’t realize at the time was that I was really an observer. It wasn’t until my third trip to Africa, when I volunteered with African Impact, that I understood this because I was no longer an observer, I was finally a participant in my experience. I was no longer watching lions, I was actively playing a role in securing their future as Africa’s apex predator. I was no longer watching locals live their life through a window, I was a part of their lives, forming relationships and contributing to their future success. I had finally found a piece of the puzzle that I didn’t even know was missing.
That’s why I am so excited about African Impact’s Summer Group Volunteering Tours, it is combining both overlanding and volunteering in one trip. One experience. Offering the chance to really experience Africa more deeply, as something more than a tourist. Not only that, but they are taking place in the two destinations that first captured my heart and forever bound me to this great continent.
Our Southern Africa Tour has you traveling from Livingstone, Zambia, home of the magnificent Victoria Falls, throughout Botswana’s best wildlife destinations, ending in vibrant Johannesburg, South Africa. The East Africa Tour will traverse Tanzania, from rural villages to the vast savannah of the Serengeti, the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro to the tropical beaches of historic Zanzibar. You will see the very best that these destinations have to offer, but more than that you will make an impact, form relationships, leave your mark on both the people and communities you visit and that is what will leave a lasting impression on you and make you fall in love with Africa!
