Stacey Addison is currently interning on the beautiful island of Zanzibar for our charity The Happy Africa Foundation. She oversees programs in the village of Jambiani alongside our volunteers, develops ways to help the local community and facilitates fundraising both on the ground and online. Giving us a glimpse into her life, home and work; Stacey has put together a blog of her favourite photos from her first month as one of our interns.
Having arrived to Zanzibar in the dark after 12 hours of travelling I woke up at 7am to this incredible view!
This photo was taken at Upendo (which means 'love' in iSwahili). This is a famous restaurant called "The Rock", it is situated on coral rock and during high tide you get short boat rides up to the little island.
This was taken at one of the Nursery Schools that we work in. The children are lining up after class ready to go out for play time. Cute, cheeky little faces.
Here I am dishing up the porridge for about 80 very hungry 3-6 year olds. The ladle that I'm using in this picture is actually made out of a coconut shell and a stick, great up-cycling!
Some happy customers here eating their porridge at Siragetil Nursery School.
Football is a big part of the community here in Jambiani and so it was only right to have a football match where Kidenga and Jozani, our two adult English classes, had a match for their first ever graduation. A lot of the village came to support the boys!
A beautiful and vivid sunset in Stone Town overlooking the Indian Ocean.
A dhow boat drifting just off Jambiani beach as the sun sets and the moon takes pride of place for the night.
A highlight with everyone as we visit a different Nursery School teacher each week for a local dinner. We eat exactly how they would, on the floor and with our hands and we also get to drink some amazing chai tea!
An incredible sight, what felt like a mirage in the beautiful ocean. This epic sandbank is close to Pungume Island on the southwest coast of Zanzibar.
Another brilliant weekend starter, a sunset BBQ at Mchamvi in Chwaka Bay. Yet another beautiful sunset in Zanzibar.
