Jenn Johnson is originally from Toronto, Canada and has been living in Cape Town and working on our non-governmental organization (NGO) internship with our registered charity The Happy Africa Foundation since January! Her six-month internship has taken her to many heights (where at one point she jumped out of a plane...) and she's here to share her experience with us! Jenn decided to give us a glimpse into her life as an intern by creating a scrapbook of memories from her time in the Mother City! From project work to a weekend trip to neighbouring Namibia, it seems like Jenn has seen and done it all - but we know Cape Town holds plenty more secrets she has yet to discover!
Hello Cape Town! Jenn arrived in the Mother City at the end of January to begin her internship!
GAPA Bean Game - Jenn doesn't just work in an office! She's out in the communities helping to support and fundraise for, including visiting an after school club run alongside Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS.
Camps Bay Beach - Taking advantage of one of Cape Town's best beaches.
Penguins - Speaking of Cape Town hotspots, Jenn visited the famous Simon's Town penguin colony on one of her free weekends!
Fun with the Luntu Kids - Jenn visits the majority of the programmes she helps to fundraise for and support as an intern. Fieldwork is a great way for interns to understand the needs of the communities they're supporting and to build relationships with locals and partners.
International Women's Day - Celebrating holidays in South Africa is always a fun time! Jenn helped our projects in Cape Town to celebrate the day!
Shark Cage Diving - Nothing like getting up close and personal with some finned friends near Cape Town! Jenn isn't a stranger to adventure on the weekends in Cape Town (wait, there's more...)
Free Fallin' - We told you she's no stranger to an adrenaline rush! One of Jenn's first weekends in Cape Town was spent falling from the sky!
Impi Challenge - Helping to support the Impi Challenge fundraising team, Jenn did some epic baking to inspire the challengers in their weekend race!
Food Donation - As an intern for The Happy Africa Foundation, Jenn helps to support a number of projects in the Cape Town communities. One way she helped was through aqcuiring a food donation for one of the local preschools through a supplier.
Trip to Namibia - Having weekends free as an intern means Jenn gets to explore everything Cape Town has to offer - but can also experience neighbouring Namibia (although it's quite the drive to reach!)
Fundraising Night - Another one of Jenn's responsibilities is to host fundraising events! Living alongside the African Impact volunteers based in Cape Town, this comes in many different shapes and sizes! One particular night, Jenn helped host a Mexican Night Fundraiser, complete with guacamole!
Smile! Interning with a charity or NGO is all about making an impact in the livelihoods of communities and families, and of course helping put a smile on people's faces!
