When you join a volunteer program in Africa the highlights are infinite, as former wildlife conservation volunteer, Saiqa Aftab, who spent a number of weeks at Thanda Private Game reserve in rural South Africa, knows every well! We asked Saiqa to tell us about her top volunteering moment via our Twitter account; she named nine instead of one! Saiqa admitted herself that “one highlight is too difficult to pick!” We want to share Saiqa’s highlights, as Tweeted by her. 9. Community work! Helping with refurbishments and interacting with the local kids was incredibly fulfilling. 8. Completing ID booklets for Thanda’s Big 5! 7. Digging out alien plant chremolena with pickaxes and machetes. 6. Being drenched in a thunderstorm. 5. Being invaded by stink bugs on another night drive! 4. Nighttime hyena sighting! 3. Getting stuck in the mud & pushing the jeep out. 2. Having a leopard cross the road in front of us (and then disappear). 1. Seeing the Mduna elephants up close, which African Impact had been tracking for 7 months without trace! After making such incredible memories in South Africa, Saiqa has decided to return to Thanda as one of our staff members. She will be making her way back to Africa this month as Volunteer Coordinator for the program’s community development projects. Make your own memories by volunteering at the same location on our wildlife projects researching the African Big 5, monitoring large predator species, or even combine conservation efforts and community projects on our Over 30’s Wildlife Research and Community Development Project!
