From the initial stages of the ‘Beyond the Roots’ garden at the wazee, there has been one member in particular that has given his time, energy and dedication to promoting and maintaining the vegetable garden at Langoni old folks home. This person is Mr. Teacher.
At the age of seventy four, Mr. Teacher loves to stay active and is a keen gardener. He is embedded in the memory of every volunteer and staff member for his friendly disposition, positivity and his eagerness to help. He has been continuously reliable in taking on the task of watering and looking after the garden during weekends and various other times when African Impact staff and volunteers are busy with other projects. In addition to his hard work on the garden, he has been the ‘go to guy’ for advice on improving the garden and ensuring the sustainability of its crops. He was the first to alert us to the need for a better more potent insecticide for the tomatoes. He was also the first to greet us with news of the gardens first harvest, and he was the first to ensure we saw the spinach and tomatoes that had been harvested before they cooked them.
In addition to such, he has been inspired to extend the garden and create his own Mchicha crop patch for both himself and the other senior folks at the home. Never one to shy away from hard work, we are delighted to have him as part of our team because without him, we surely would not have experienced the success we have to date.
