At the beginning of this month, we invited our Business Managers from our projects across Africa to join us at our headquarters in South Africa for our annual conference, known as ‘The Gathering’. We convened at the beautiful Team House on the Cape Town South Peninsula with gorgeous views over Noordhoek beach. We’re convinced that this stunning setting contributed to our creativity over the four day conference! The Gathering allows our entire team to get together and share ideas, knowledge and success stories; workshop important challenges and implement new processes. This type of collaboration is vital for the organisation to continue on its growth path and keep offering volunteer projects that are more responsible, more sustainable and more rewarding!
But it’s not all work and no play! We believe that a bit of healthy competition is good for morale so we held quiz rounds during our breaks, with some fantastic spot prizes sponsored by our friends at FitFlop SA. The winning team received a hamper which included a Newlands Brewery Tour and a Cape Winelands tour by bike from our friends at Bikes n Wine. Part of this year’s Gathering included a motivational talk from The Underdog Project who are doing amazing things for youth in South Africa; a trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium; and a township tour of Khayelitsha, Cape Town’s largest informal settlement, where some of our team got to try barbequed chicken feet for the first time!
The Two Oceans Aquarium kindly sponsored us ten extra tickets so that we could have children from Ikhuzi Primary School in Khayelitsha, join us on our tour of the aquarium! It was great to share the experience with these deserving kids!
The Gathering ended off with a huge bash at The Team House which was themed 'A Touch of Africa' and where many of our partners and affiliate organisations joined in the celebration. Many wonderful suppliers came on board to either sponsor or offer us discounts for the party. These included: sparkling wine from Distell, Hansa beers from SAB, wine from Van Loveren (Tangled Tree range), a Bedouin tent from Tentation, catering by Gourmet Style (Michelle Koopman), and décor by Theme Creations.
We enjoyed fantastic local entertainment which included breakdancing from Heal the Hood, magic acts by Russell Fox, live music by Dave Ledbetter and Dingiswayo Juma (Naturali Catchi Rhythms) and for later on, Shaun Meyer aka DJ Slim spinning some tunes on the decks! It wouldn’t be a party without a few prizes to give away, and thanks to very generous sponsorships we were able to hand lucky winners meal vouchers for The Toad, 'Into the Blue' coffee table books from Save Our Seas Shark Centre, a tandem skydive from Skydive Cape Town, a shark cage dive from Sharkwatch SA and a luxury stay at Thanda Tented Safari Camp!
We’d like to say a big thank you to all of our wonderful sponsors for their generosity, our partners, volunteers and interns for their continued support, and to the entire African Impact team for a very successful annual Gathering. The future looks indeed bright, and we can’t wait to get there!
