This year, we marked an incredible milestone – African Impact turned ten years old! That means ten years of facilitating incredible volunteer experiences in Africa, helping thousands of volunteers experience the continent while making a difference to its people and wildlife.
We have spent the month thanking our volunteers for the incredible achievements – nothing too big or too small – of the past year. This blog is dedicated to highlighting just a handful of the incredible differences our volunteers across Africa made in 2014.
Raking in the awards
Two of our wonderful volunteer projects received recognition for their work and innovation this year. Our Cape Town projects won the Global Youth Travel award for Outstanding Volunteer Project at the 2014 WYSE Conference. In addition, we took home the GoAbroad Innovation Award for Innovative New Program for the second year running, this time for our Teaching, Education & Community Development Program in Moshi, Tanzania.
Building and refurbishments
Volunteers at our projects all over the continent got their hands dirty this year, completing a number of refurbishments and building projects. Of particular note are all the enhancements our volunteers and staff made to schools from Kenya to South Africa. Water collection systems were erected in Kenya while in Tanzania a new roof was fitted to the preschool where volunteers teach. A security wall was built around Zambezi Sawmills School in Livingstone, and toilets were built at two crèches in rural South Africa. This is not to mention the countless resources, classroom refurbishments and lessons that volunteers enhanced.
Beyond the Roots
To mark our 10th birthday, volunteers at ten locations set out on the 18th of July to create ten food gardens in communities across Africa. From gardens at education centres and schools to community income-generating plots, volunteers were a part of an initiative that lasted far beyond the one day – these gardens continue to make an impact each and every day.
Truth be told, we could never pinpoint every single highlight that our volunteers helped us achieve in 2014 – there are simply too many! Instead, we’ve put together infographics of some of the highlights from many of our project locations, which you can view below.
We want to thank all of our incredible volunteers who supported, volunteered and spread the word about African Impact in 2014. We’ll continue to help volunteers make a difference, create lasting memories and explore Africa for years to come!
