Volunteer Work in Lesotho

Known as the Kingdom in the sky, Lesotho is encircled and entirely landlocked by its larger neighbour, South Africa. A peaceful country with a rural African atmosphere, a reputation of a fantastic adventure holiday destination and friendly and welcoming local people, a volunteer or working holiday in Lesotho is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

The country is called the Kingdom of the sky for good reason – it is made up of mostly highlands and ringed by mountains, which make for a rugged and captivating landscape. There is splendid scenery on offer for any traveller and a chance to explore remote valleys and craggy mountainous areas.

Many of the kingdom’s villages are so remote they can only be reached on horseback, foot or by light aircraft and hiking or pony trekking from village to village are the two most popular ways of exploring the magnificent countryside. Still natural and almost entirely free of fences, most of the local people still live a simple and traditional way of life, in the foothills of the mountains.

Opportunities abound to appreciate the untamed but beautiful landscapes and bearded vultures and black eagles can be viewed from the Maluti and Lesotho Drakensberg. Lesotho is also the last stronghold of the bald ibis and Letsie Lake and other wetlands offer some extraordinary waterbird viewing.

Lesotho offers a wide range of other activities and wonders for you to enjoy while on your travels, working or volunteer holiday including:

  • Maletsunyane Falls – Southern Africa’s highest single drop waterfall. Experience awe inspiring noise and spray at the bottom of the falls. The drop is so great, sunshine never reaches the bottom of the falls and there is often snow to be seen, even in summer! Also on offer here is the world’s highest commercial abseil off a 200m high cliff.
  • Morija – a town steeped in history with famous dinosaur footprints to be found in the above hills!
