GHANA

Volunteer Work in Ghana

Often referred to as “Africa for beginners”, Ghana is a friendly and welcoming country and home to a number of diverse people and cultures. Travellers will find hundreds of kilometres of coast shared by beautiful palm-fringed beaches, ruined European forts, national parks and reserves surprisingly rich in wildlife and lively markets and fishing villages.

Grassy plains stretch from the coast inland, widening in the East while dense rainforests cover the south and west of the country. Rainforests are being developed into national parks and game reserves, and although arguably smaller than reserves found elsewhere in Africa, are well worth the visit and travellers will have the opportunity to see antelope, lions, monkeys, elephant, beautiful birds and butterflies, amongst many others!

For a truly unique experience we recommend a visit to Kakum National Park, a largely undisturbed rainforest in which visitors can experience wildlife, tropical plants and a canopy of walkway suspended about 100 feet above the forest floor – a recipe for truly spectacular views!

Shai Hills Resource Reserve, filled with granite covered hills, is an opportunity to experience once the fascinating archaeological sites dotted amongst the hillsides. Various animals can be seen here, inclucing kob, bushbuck, oribi, primates, and over 160 species of birds.

Rich in history, Ghana boasts sites of war between the British and indigenous population and ruined European forts, a moving reminder of the country’s past African slave trade involvement. Some of the most famous include Cape Coast Castles and Elmina, recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage Monuments. Millions of slaves passed through Cape Coast Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in existence today, and the Cape Coast Castle museum is now located here.

Open markets, open almost every day in the large cities such as the flamboyant capital city of Accra, provide sights and sounds of a traditional African bazaar. Kumasi Central Market is one of the largest open air markets in West Africa with over 10,000 vendors and bargaining is expected and is an intriguing part of the buying process! The Arts Centre in Accra, offers hundreds of vendors selling wooden carvings, masks, beads, brass and leather crafts, fabric, drums, African music and paintings by local artists.

Our Volunteer Project in Ghana offers you the perfect platform to immerse yourself in the fascinating local culture and history, as well as the chance to get involed in local communities and form lasting friendships with the very hospitable locals.
